Default Clunk! during turn

Hello, the names Andrew. Im a newbie here to the site. Ive recently bought an all stock 2000 4 door cherokee 4x4. Theres one problem im having with it and thought some jeep buffs could help me out.

It doesnt really bother any suspension or steering from what I can tell, but it bothers me! Usually only when im backing up and i turn my wheels either direction i get a CLUNK sound coming from the front suspension. Seems like its coming from the center of the front suspension. Its kinda loud and sounds ugly as hell. Any ideas on whats going on??

i just had the same type of problem. it was a bushing on my track bar that went bad it split in half. you might want to look the bushings to make sure they are still intact

I checked the track bar and the end that had the ball joint thats connected to the frame has grease all over the boot. Not sure if its just excess grease or if it all leaked out of the boot. Didnt get a good look though. Ill look into that.

Yes check track bar bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints, but what fixed this on a Silver 01 i had was tightening the steering box bolts(theres 3 of them). That clunk went on for a good half year in that XJ, with shops checking everything, telling me it was fine and that they couldnt find anything wrong before i checked those three bolts that go through the frame, into the steering box. You can see em plain as day towards the front of the drivers side wheelwell.

Might wanna check the bushings in the control arms as well, My dads bone stock 1990 would do that if you hit a bump or making a sharp corner, we looked at the track bar mounts and everything checked out so we moved on to control arms and saw they were beyond ruined so we replaced all the bushings in the upper and lower control arms and havent had it since.

I have the same problem... I've noticed that my windshield washer reservoir, located in the driver side wheel well, is broken and rattles alot. Maybe check that after all the other more obvious stuff.

I had the same problem. I replaced all the front sway bar bushings(end links, etc.) and the trackbar bushings. No more sounds whatsoever.

Default clunk

Hop up underneath the truck and have someone turn the steering back and forth. Hopefully they can try and re-create the sound for you. If it pops you should find it pretty quickly

In addition to your steering stuff (tie rods, knuckles, etc) pay attention to your trac bar. If that thing isnt right it can cause all sorts of steering issues and sounds. The bushing on mine went south and I would get all sorts of biding, popping sounds. Make sure the torque on the axle end is good (I think around 75 ft lbs) and the frame end is solid. If your axle isnt staying still under there while you are turing it can make things goofy.

While you are under there grab a grease gun and hit every fitting you can find. It may not fix your problem but is always good to do
