Default climate control in 2001 cherokee sport

Hey guys,

Just wondering if any of yall have had this problem before. The climate control system in my 2001 Cherokee no longer works. A/C and blower settings both work fine. Basically, I cant switch from hot to cold. I know the ac is working fine because this has been an ongoing issue. Usually when I turn the **** to "hot" the temperature may get stuck there. In the past, I could just turn the **** back and forth a few times then back to cold, and it would go back to the "cold" setting. Yesterday, it finally just crapped out. I know my ac is fine, but now when I use the vent setting, it just blows hot air, even when the temperature **** is on the cold setting. And of course, since it is stuck in the "hot" setting, its causing my ac to blow warmer air. I don't do a lot of repairs myself. Just wondering if this is an easy fix, or do I need to seek professional help somewhere.

Thanks for your time

Regan

My daughters '02 GCL had a similar problem.. it turned out to be the control panel itself. EZ fix, but as I recall the part was kinda pricey.. maybe $80? Hope this helps

Sounds like your blend door is sticking. In 99+ XJs the blend door is electrically actuated, it's possible the motor itself is gummed up. To get at it you need to disassemble the entire dash. It's doable with a lot of patience and a few days, if you don't have those I'd suggest shopping around for a quote.

Here's a schematic of your Blend Air Door circuit.

To get at the actuator you will need to go into the passnger footwell with a flashlight and look back up above the floor outlet. Turn the ignition switch to RUN, without starting the engine. While watching the Blend Air Door Actuator, turn the AC/Heat temp selector from hot to cold and see if the actuator is moving. Note that fuse 25 in the Junction Block (JB) protects the circuit. Fuse 25 is the 15 Amp mini fuse, second up from the bottom on the rear (your right) bank of mini fuses. The JB is in the passenger footwell.

In my FSM its on page 24-25 (R&R).

My FSM is old so a more current revision may show it elsewhere.

Edit: That schematic I put together is from the 2000 FSM and 1999 FSM. The diagram in the 1999 FSM is worthless.

Can you retro-fit it with '98 & down parts? Might be wise.

It would be easier to fix what he has rather than try to modify it.

Thanks for all the responses guys. At the moment, the cold air setting has decided to work again. So for the moment, I will put off trying to fix this problem. I don't plan on having my heat on anytime soon. On a side note, I just realized today that I have close to 100,000 miles on my clutch. Still works great, but my last one went out at 75,000 miles, and I was in downtown Atlanta during rush hour traffic, not a good time at all. Making me think that I may want to get things checked soon just to be on the safe side. I plan to drive my Cherokee until the wheels literally fall off.
