My dark green clear coat is flaking off on the top and on the rear hatch, so far can only see is looking at the top so I really would like to stop this before it works its way down and is visible from the sides.
Short of painting the entire car what have others done to top the clear coat from further deterioration?

If it's a small area and you want to save some money you can go with taping off and sanding and clearcoating yourself. I did it once on a vehicle and turned out pretty good.
I found a link and it's basically the route I took.

Yep. Once it starts going, it's telling you that it's breaking down. It's not like rust that spreads, really.
You can sand and repaint the affected areas, but as far as keeping it from spreading, just keep it washed and waxed with a good quality wax, and hope for the best.
