Default Cherokee Accident 92 XJ

My son went off the road and sideswiped a fire hydrant.....yes it involved a cell phone....just one more reason to dislike those things. Anyway, the passenger doors (both) and rear quarter are wiped. The post seperating the 2 doors is torqued. Anybody have an approximation on repair cost at a body shop? If the cost to repair is too high I'll probably have to sell it.....don't have alot of loose cash and definitly didn't plan on something like this. Any ideas/input would be appreciated...RIC

Can't be driven legally. Was driven home from the accident but the rear door is opened up like a can opener was used on it and the police officer informed me that although he was allowing it to be driven back to my home, he didn't want to see it on the road again until it was repaired. Thanx for your input.

$3,000.00 +/-

Take the doors off and make it a mud buggy or rock crawler.

Mud buggy would be cheaper.

i'm not sure how mechanically inclined you are, but teamcherokee.com sells a lot of body parts. if you don't mind putting some of your own time into it, you could probably replace the busted doors/panels yourself for a fraction of what a body shop would charge. when it's time to paint the vehicle, let the body shop do that.

Make it into an offroad only thumper or part it out. It's going to cost you more to fix it than it is worth.

Is the body twisted, how does it look from behind when it drives.

Most deff. going to be more expensive to fix at a body shop then it's worth.

JY Doors are cheap and easy to install. Rear quarters are harder to fix but certainly do-able. :-)

If the unibody is tweaked, part it out and get another one, or buy another one with bad engine or tranny and swap in yours then part out all the surplus.

I had a car repaired once that had been lightly T-boned. $65 an hour frame machine time x 3 hours. I swapped the doors myself. My opinion: Fix it.

I guess it depends on where you are located, around here (Chicago area) I have found several non-running or "needs tranny" XJs for $500 or less. I got mine for $600 and all it needed was a PS Pump.

If motor and transmission are good you can find a good 91 to 98 Jeep Cherokee with motor or transmission out for about $500. I just bought a 1996 Jeep Cherokee for $500 with transmission out then run on to a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport $800 -repaired transmission and Just finish replacing Motor today, both running good and body very good shape. Most Jeeps with a lot body damage are not worth repairing.

find an xj with a blown motor or trans and swap over your drivetrain into it can be done much cheaper then having it repaired especially if you can do alll the work yourself

Don't forget about his mangled rear quarter panel.

I also have a 2000 XJ. How much of the 92 will be compatable with the 2000?

That is where it gets sketchy. In 97 the body underwent a mild redesign. The fenders, header panel, grill, and rear hatch were changed. Along with a complete interior redesign. The 00 and 01 models changed to a coil pack ignition. Suspension components are the same throughout the XJ model. 92 to 01 would have a vast difference in the emission sytem, engine control, trans control, and simply the amount of sensor that changed through the years.
