Last month my immobiliser started playing up: When I'd turn the key in the ignition the 'immobiliser light' staysed on and I was unable to start the car. I own this car since 2003 and this had never happened before.(NOTE: it was not flashing as it does when the wrong key is used). After I turned the key back and on again the light went off again and I was able to start. Hmmm...I adapted to that but then one night my trick wouldn't work and i was stuck, unable to start my car. Only after disconnecting the battery and 'resetting' the computer could I drive to the nearest Jeep repair shop. There some part was repalced and they got me a new key, all for $750 (that's Aussie dollars). Driving off the premises of the repair shop all looked fine.

The following week the problem reocurred as if nothing had ever been repaired. Going back to the Jeep shop they told me that I 'probably' needed to have the "PCM" replaced which would cost me about $2500. I had a feeling they were a little bit clueless and were happy to keep doctoring on my car until they have learnt something new about Jeeps. It seems to me the first repair might not have been necessary but the mechanic insisted it was. In terms of results it is as if nothing was repaired.
I'd be very grateful for any ideas/shared experiences with this sort of problem? Thank you!

 

$2500!? They're trying to pull a fast one on you. I'd stay away from that mechanic if I were you.

I can't tell you if that is the problem or not, but if you do need a PCM, it should only cost a couple hundred dollars tops.

 

The SKIM module, which is probably what they replaced the first time, SKIM gets a PIN number that is stored in the PCM. I would check the wire harness between the SKIM and PCM, it is common for pins to get pulled out of connectors or wires to short out if the steering column is moved up and down. Some people do this every time they get in and out of the jeep.
The Key would have been my first guess, im amazed at what some peope do with their keys!!!

Aussie Dollars and US Dollars don't account for THAT much difference. A PCM on EBAY in the United States is $250 w/free shipping. That's only $298 Australian Dollars.

 

True, but a mopar replacment PCM and a EBay PCM are two different things....What's the warranty on the EBay PCM? I think the mopar is 12 months 12k miles IIRC. Could be 3 years 36k miles, it is powertrain...I'll check tomarrow.

I've played the Flea-Bay PCM game with customers before....they always have the same response...."What do you mean it won't work" Same thing with keys they spend a $100 bucks on key fobs and that don't work either. LoL for $40 more dollars I could have sold you a key that would have worked the first time, now they have $240 dollars spent on two fobs and one works and one dosn't

I hope Heathers "jeep shop" will help her out and correct her problem.

 

EBAY listing states a "Lifetime Warranty". It's also pre-programmed for your specific vehicle. The seller has 100% feedback on all 700 transactions.

I bought key fobs for my aftermarket alarm off EBAY and was able to program them myself. Got 3 of them for $50.

 

1999 jeep cherokee classic immoblizer module I have spent a lot of money , and it keeps going bad... is there any way to by pass or wire around this problem ?
