Just because there is a cotter pin stuck in that castle nut, don't assume it is tight!
So I am under the front end of the Cherokee, looking for play and slop in the steering. The track bar has up and down slop by pushing pulling by hand where it attaches to the frame on the drivers side, but the joint portion of it is tight. There is side to side slop with the steering wheel wiggle test. I pull the cotter pin out if the castle nut and the nut is FINGER tight!
So....a few cranks of the wrench later and a new pin stuck in, slop is gone.

Unfortunately as we age, our nuts tend to get a little loose and we start to sag and get rusty in places we never expected to. Oh, you were talking about Cherokee! Nevermind.
