Default Check Gauges

Hey guys. When I start up my XJ, sometimes the "Check Gauges" light will come on and the oil pressure is little or none. As the oil pressure gets up to normal, the light will go off. Anybody had this happen or know what this is? Thanks for your help.

Does the oil pressure stay normal once running? I know that oil pressure sending unit is not that great - I have had to replace it a few times because of mis readings - the oil pressure really should build up fast enough for that light not to come on.

Yes, it stays normal. Once the light goes off it won't come back on. It usually happens at first start up in the morning.

X2 on the sending unit being junk. Try that first, it's prolly not a low oil pressure situation, just a bunk sending unit!!

The next question is which oil filter you are using. They have an anti-drainback valve in them and if you have the verticle oil filter and that valve is defective you have to fill the oil filter before it will build any pressure.

great point - you don't want zero pressure on start up - I always keep a simple analog oil pressure gauge in my shop that i can screw in to the block and check the actual pressure - don't aways trust these fangle computers

Grant I used to have a "T" on my engint where the oil pressure sender is but after the third time I broke some thing (sender, or gauge) I removed it. The other side contained a mechanical oil pressure gauge from a motorcycle that was fluid filled so the vibration didn't affect it.

Hope it works out better for you than it did for me. I am just too clumsey for that set-up anymore. Maybe when I was in my 20s but not now. Just to prone to mishaps.
