Default Check Engine Light Clears Itself?

Is it normal for a CEL to just go away? I was showing a P0420 code for about a week and then it just went away in its own. I didn't do anything to it. Is this normal? Or is it a sign of a worse/bigger problem?

yes it does, if the condition that caused it to trigger is intermittent and stops after a few service cycles the light goes out, the code will remain stored.

As mentioned, the fact that the light is going on and off indicates that you are marginal on the signals that trigger this light.

P0420 is a catalytic converter efficiency code. It could mean that your catalytic converter is failing or it could be a failure of the after cat oxygen sensor itself.
