If you are just looking for something to play some basic tunes, any of the radios suggested will work. If you want to hook up subs and high end speakers and make a nice system out of it, keep with the well known brands. I myself would recommend Alpine.
Sony units are good for somebody who just wants to listen to music, but that's about as far as they go.

I have a dual cd player I put in my 98 cherokee, I'm not tossing salads in my speakers but it works fine. Radio reception is not bad and it has a usb connection for music. I paid 55 dollars for the one I have, I'm sure there are way better radio's out there. All I can say is it plays music better than I can sing so its not that bad

This is kind of where I'm at...I don't want to have $300 tied up in this. Maybe $150 and even at that, I'm a little frosted. I'd rather have new rear springs...but I love music. Tough call.

I've never actually recommended a Sony headunit before, but I think for what you want to do with it, it would be a fair call. A Sony headunit will play music just fine, and actually sound pretty good doing it.
Don't expect to push any real power through a Sony though.

I don't think anyone's mentioned clarion products. Ive had a couple of their head units in few of my cars. Ive got one that's 3 years old, has a aux in, plays mps and all the fun functions. And it sounds killer good. I payed 240 canadian for it. Best deck i ever owned.
