Good question, my buddy told me that he believed that 90,91,92,93 were all interchangeable parts but he could be completely wrong for all I know. I'm building a 91 now that's how I found out.

Yes, but I believe you'll also need to change the transfer case to match the spline count of the newer transmission.
87 - 90 have a 21 spline output
91 - 96 have a 23 spline output
