OK well because I've gotten so much help I'm trying to Pay It Back. I've been chasing a P0700 and P1898 for a while and other than some info from CCKEN, from notes he had made, couldn't really find anything that pinpointed the problem on-line. Other than the only people I found with the issue all had 1997 XJs. Lucky me (us)!
UNTIL.............TODAY
Nothing like constantly trolling CL. Scored a Factory Service Manual, Factory AW4 Powertrain Manual, Body Manual and Factory Service Bulletins.
I paid a total of $50 for all of them.
And within the AW4 manual came the listing of the P1898! SWEEEEEET!
Now it did recommend a DRB tool but also gives testing steps and common component failures.
I was already leaning towards maybe a made TPS and have a local shop that I've developed a relationship with that was willing to hookup their DRB. But the manual really made other things make sense.
It looks to possibly be the Speed Sensor on the rear of the transmission. My transmission was VERY neglected like the rest of my XJ so the possibility of the Speed Sensor getting gunked up and not reading correctly is a possible. My research had found ONE other posting about a dirty Speed Sensor.
I've scored a FACTORY Speed Sensor and it's on it way for 1/4 of what I found factory one for.
Staying positive... thanks to those that helped!

I'm not familiar with the P1898 code and Googling is showing a bunch of other owners that are having trouble figuring it out too!
I did find this information though in one thread which points you towards the torque converter clutch or a solenoid. I don't think the TPS is involved here. Good luck and keep us posted!
------------------------------------------------------------
Vehicle Application:
1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L
Customer Concern:
Transmission code P1898. Transmission does not shift correctly or Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) is not working correctly.
Tests/Procedures:
1. Check if the TCC is working OK. The code is either for solenoid #1 functional fault or the TCC solenoid functional fault.
2. If solenoid #1 is stuck open, the transmission will only get 1st and 4th gear. If solenoid #1 is stuck closed, the transmission will only get 2nd and 3rd gear.
3. If the TCC solenoid is stuck closed, TCC never locks up. If the TCC solenoid is stuck open, TCC stays locked up all the time.
Potential Causes:
Solenoid #1
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid
Diagnostic Codes:
P1898

Same here.
UPDATE:
Solved a bad miss problem this evening (bad coil connector), and it was running butter smooth for the first time in a long time. That allowed me to notice something with the trans while I was out on my test drive.
Going down a significant incline @ 55, my trans unlocked for a few seconds, maybe 5 or so. I was very light on the gas as I was engine braking to hold 55 down the hill, so when the trans unlocked the RPMs dropped. Then it locked back up and the RPMs went back up. I have suspected a random unlocking now and then, but with the engine running rough it was hard to be sure. Now I"m sure.
It's probably the solenoid for the TCU lockup. I"ll be looking into that.

Mine only throws the codes after a day of wheeling. If I then drive it around town for a few days the code goes away and doesn't come back till I put it in 4wd.

The last time I had this I just had the p0700 code. Took it to a shop and they couldn't tell what was wrong with it just from the computer. So they said to go to another guy that's better at wiring issues. But when I got it back the light wasn't on anymore and I was able to get it inspected.
