CEL code P1898 ( and P0700)
Went offroading a month ago and my CEL came on again...just like clock work... Looked up the codes, same codes, p0700 and p1898...
Nothing online gives an idea of what would cause this.

Been a while since this issue has come up. I believe you need someone who has as scanner that can access the TCM (transmission control module). Maybe a transmission repair shop? Supposedly the TCM is telling the PCM to turn on the CEL because somethings wrong. Never saw where anyone posted if the issue was solved.
Yeah I took mine to a tranny shop and they said they couldn't see any issue with the tranny and thought it could be the wiring harness. Then they referred to another guy that does more with wiring.
I came across this posted by the owner of a '97 XJ SE. He got both codes you have. Here is the tech's answer. Maybe worth a shot if you haven't already.
"Hi there. The TCM and the PCM are two different modules the codes you have are both transmission related. With the trans at operating temp check fluid level. also look at the fluid on the stick it should be red and clear bright and shiny, you may get by with a simple filter change, but these codes are internal transmission failures, especially P1898 Solenoid 1 or 3 functional fault, this could be a solenoid fault or a valve body fault. If the fluid looks or smells burnt replace filter and about 4 quarts of fluid if this does not repair problem trans is due for rebuild."
