I have a 1999 4 door XJ and I don't have a working key to unlock my doors. My key to the vehicle only works in the ignition. It's a pet peeve of mine to have multiple keys so I'm asking if it's possible to re-key the doors to my ignition. I just want 1 key for the whole jeep. If so, can I do this myself or would I have to hire a locksmith? I would rather do it myself versus a locksmith. If not, how much would a locksmith typically charge.

I know I can buy a new door lock cylinder but like I said, I only want 1 key. Do they sell a new cylinder kit that replaces all the locks if I can't re-key my doors?

Any help would be much appreciated.

From the factory they are one key for all locks. Ignition was probably replaced. Its easier to cut a key to your door locks then key your ignition to match that key. If you can find a locksmith with a walkin shop would be a lot cheaper taking it to em. Be easier than buying a lockset and replacing all 3 locks.

You can do it, but it requires you having to pull the ignition cylinder apart so you could get the right codes for the tumblers. A locksmith should be able to recode the door lock cylinders just by having the key and a cylinder kit.

Door lock cylinders probably have to come out. My locksmith charged me $55.00 to install a new one and change it to match the other side.

This was on my '87 Pioneer. It uses one square key for the ignition and one round key for the body locks.

The cylinders do have to come out in order to recode them.

Man that's tough! Don't forget the rear hatch also. Oy! I am sure it can be done but would cost a fortune just to get rid of one key.

go to the scrap yard and find a newer jeep with a key and take the ignition and body locks. don't forget the glove box lock too.

it's very easy to remove the ignition cylinders on the newer vehicles as long as you have the key. just remove the bottom plastic on the column and with the key in the ignition, you just need to push the retainer pin and pull the cylinder.
the door locks are held in with a clip. the hatch may be a bit tougher, but still pretty easy.

i'm sure you can get them all for pretty cheap.

you dont want to have your door locks rekeyed to match your ignition. Then your pulling every cylinder out. When you could just match the ignition to the door. Those jeeps are about the easiest cars to cut a key to. The door locks do not have to be removed to cut a key for em. Once you get your door key you have your code for the ignition. tumblers are 2-8 in the doors 1-8 are in the ignition. You could repin the ignition yourself its not that difficult your really just moving tumbler positions around. Locksmith will charge you about 20 at a walkin shop to cut a key for your door . Im a locksmith in kc mo if you need any more help or xtra tumblers let me know.

You can always just remove all of the tumblers from the door locks and then put the cylinders back in the doors, but then any key that is similar will unlock your Jeep.

I thought about this. So you are saying buy 2 new door lock cylinders and use that key to re-key my ignition?

No im saying just go to a locksmith with a walk in shop and he can cut a key to your existing door locks for about 20 bucs. then key your ignition to the key he made for the door. Cutting a key to any jeep, dodge 98 up are stupid easy to cut they just read easy. They make a tool you just stick in the lock and reads the wafer depth. No need to pull a lock or door panel.

I recently bought a new-to-me 2010 ram w/the 5.7 hemi. Recently it has been getting difficult to get the ignition to trigger the starter. The key turns easily and everything feels good, but sometimes I have to remove the key and reinsert it or turn it very hard to get it to start.Then i contact to Davie Locksmith and they reach within 15 minutes and resolve my whole problem.

i bought a 200 grand cheroke lar it came with one key that only works ignition but not door lock ether something was changed or lock is broken? i ant a key to get in if say my fob battery gord bad
