Default Can I leave the manifolds on when Iremove the head?

The title says it all. Can I / should I/ is it possible to leave the intake and exhaust manifolds on the head and remove it as a unit?

Interesting question

I'm going to say you shouldn't because of how heavy and awkward it would be and you really do NOT want to drop it.

But whether or not it is possible... I couldn't say. There could be something unexpected that gets hung up/caught/wedged trying to get it out as one unit.

I would pick it out with a hoist or a bar and two guys. I have zero reason to unbolt them, all I want to do is replace my valve lifters. No head work to be done at all. But I am also inexperienced with this type of work.

I pulled my engine and replaced the long block into the XJ with the manifolds already installed. I don't see why it would be much different with just the head - as long as you were using balanceable/equalizing equipment. The long block balances really well from the "popular consensus" lifting bolt holes. With the manifolds still in place, I would assume a head alone would lean considerably more than a long block, but manageable with good help and a steady lift.

double check everything for plugs, wires, cables, anything that is connected that needs to be disconnected. Then check a third time.
You dont want to be wondering what your snagging on when lifting 200 pounds out then half the wiring harness rips apart

For the extra hour it would take, I would just remove them. It will make everything a lot easier.

I agree. It's not the easiest job at best - & it reduces the chances of testing the tensile strength of something you forgot to disconnect: never a welcome diversion.

I would leave the manis on, if saving time and effort is the object, and lift it as you said, using a hoist or engine lifter

You say you are "inexperienced", so lowering the head back down accurately could be a new ball game unless the assembly can be lowered perfectly level

I just pulled 3 Jaguar I6 engines & trans and I always unbolt the ex manis on them cause it takes 10mins, the downpipes are a nightmare, the inlet is a nightmare and stays on

It's possible to remove the head with the intake and exhaust manifolds still attached. It can save you some time and effort, especially on an '87 Cherokee 4.0. Just make sure to disconnect any necessary components, like sensors or fuel lines, and take your time to avoid damaging anything in the process.
