Default Camshaft/Crankshaft sensor questions

As the title says. I'm getting a code for intermittent camshaft sensor fail , the light goes on and off. I've searched but can't find anything. It keeps coming up with crankshaft results. I have a 99 cherokee sport 4.0 automatic. Can someone help me find my Camshaft sensor?

It is inside the distributor under the rotor I believe.

A pain to get to?
Also is this the correct replacement?

No idea on either. I've never looked at it or had to deal with it.

Remove the cap and rotor, the cam sensor will just pull right off of the distributor housing. Probably the easiest sensor to replace.

Had the same problem with my 1999. Sometimes it would crank all day and not start, next day it would start right up. Very easy fix. Parts store might have it listed as the ignition pick up or pick up coil . Just pull the rotor off and replace it, five minute job.

My jeep runs fine. The light comes and goes. The only issue I had was the jeep died while on the the trail. Died super gently too not rough at all. Fired back up after 2 tries. Idled fine after.

If it's throwing the code for the crank sensor, it's a pretty safe bet that's where the problem is. Mine was starting hard last week so I threw a 'distributor pickup' on it and didn't fix it. Was ready to do the ckps when today it threw a code...idle air control...and I threw a junkyard spare on and it not only fixed the slightly low idle but now it starts up like it should, barely 1 revolution of the engine and she jumps right up there.

By the way, Ebay has IAC for about $9 and map sensors about the same price.

The codes it ls throwing don't mention crankshaft sensor. Just camshaft. The codes are P0340 and P1391

You are right. I think what threw me was he is calling it the camshaft position sensor. There is no camshaft position sensor on engines that have the pictured 'distributor switchplate'.

I had starting problems and did the switchplate sensor as well as the CKPS. However it turned out to be the fuel pump. KOEO pressure 10lbs. Got a new pump with 10yr guarantee from ebay for $14. Then needed strainer and pickup filter from az, $25. Then the filler neck had rusted clean through and debris was in the tank, so, junkyard got a plastic filler for $7 when ebay and az wanted $100. If I had it to do over would have got the pressure regulator and sender too. Anyhow starts and runs like a champ now, idles smooth, and the engine noise on startup was likely lean misfire, potentially very damaging, gone also.

Mine was throwing code for crank sensor. Replaced that and still had intermittent starting problems. Read on this forum that a cheap code reader will just throw a code that is basically telling you there is no communication between the crank and the cam. The sensor under the rotor was the problem .

Anyway to that end I replaced my 'distributor pickup' (what is called on my 97) as pictured above, last week. There were no codes and I was sure was that or the ckps. My codes are the obd1 i think, they are not the P series. Might have been some overall improvement but did not cure my delayed starting. That turned out to be the iac sticking, which eventually burned out the motor and I got the code 25, iac motor. Stuffed in a spare and back in the saddle again.
It is a bit confusing, the code states camshaft sensor but if you search for camshaft sensor not much comes up. But the part name is switchplate distributor. Does anyone know how I can test to see if the sensor is bad? I'm going to look for exposed wiring today but would like to know if there's a way I put my multimeter to something and see.
