Default head lights

i've just recently aquired a 91 cherokee it's a bit rough but i like it but the head lights sometimes will go out completely while driving if i work the switch a couple of times they come back on and also when i stop and turn them off the lights stay on for a bit then go out i think its just a bad switch but would like to know if there is anything else i should look at first thanks

Could be wiring, the bulb, or switch. Id take apart the switch and inspect contacts, but thats just me.

Your Headlight Switch Is the Culprit.
Jeep (Chrysler to be Exact) Engineers Decided that it was OK to run the Full Load of the Headlights thru the Switch (Without a Relay?).
This causes the Switch to Overheat & Eventually Fail.
The Solution is to Buy & Install an Aftermarket Headlight Wiring Harness w/ Hi & Lo Beam Relays.

This is What I Installed (High Quality, Great Price & Easy to Install):

Same Problem I Had. This, Replacing the Switch & LED H4 Conversion Solved the Problem 4 Ever!
Way Brighter Lights Too!

Many cars were designed this way up until recently. Since the headlight circuit was considered critical, it was designed as simple as possible to avoid failure resulting from a failed relay. Running the current through the switch was considered the most reliable design.

Funny how that worked out. Then again, I rather doubt the original AMC engineers expected XJs to still be on the road in any significant numbers in 2017 to be able to have this problem.

it seems like if i turn off lites and then turn off key the lites obviously go out right as soon as turned off.
if i turn off key then turn off lites there is a delay so i can find my way in the dark.
is that right?

oh, 2000 sport
