the gear on my cam shaft for the distributor is bad and keeps tearing up my distributor gears, which then fubar's the timing and it wont run. i can keep putting dist gears in it but its only a temporary fix.

can you change the cam shaft in a 4.0 without pulling the head off? if I gotta pull the head off I might ended up buying a whole motor to go thru, check it out and play with before dropping it in. would like to do a header and maybe upgrade the cam if i have to do all this now.

just curious what kind of work im getting myself into.

not sure .. but why not just have the head reworked.. (if it has to come off) plus a little hotter cam .. would still be cheaper than a used motor

i got a line on 2 motors locally... $300 and $400 both were good running engines removed from wrecked trucks.

its a matter of if i can do this easy with the head on, im gonna go cheap and slap a cam in it and keep driving it. if its gonna be more involved, ill just wait, save up some money and take a used motor and go thru it then drop it in when its ready.
