Every time I turned on the A/C or defrost, I got a loud squealing noise, sounded like a bad bearing. After replacing the bearing in the A/C pulley, and cleaning all the clutch parts, the noise was still present. Ok... So I unplugged the electric fan, which engages whenever the A/C compressor is activated, and no noise.

If you have the same symptoms, check your electric fan before assuming it's the compressor.

 

A mechanic's stethoscope is a much cheaper way to find the source of a noise.

 

Good advice. I considered doing just that, using a piece of hose in that manner actually, but didn't, as it seemed to me so obviously the pulley bearing. In this case it's not so much the cost, but it would have saved me a lot of time.

Looks like I can get a new Crown electric fan assembly for $90 or so.
