Default a/c problems just like the rest.

I have a 1990 xj which there are no bypass pulleys made for this specific vehicle for some reason. I have the air conditioning completely disconnected, no wires or hoses left. The only component left is the actual compressor. This is my trail rig and i could care less for a/c. Now that there is nothing left to it, the compressor makes a very high pitched squeal at all times. Is there anyway to fill the holes where hoses used to be connected with like motor oil then cap them to stop the noise. Please help me fix this, i hate this noise.

thank you
kenny

i don't think you can fill and cap but you might be able to run a loop hose from one hole to the next so the compressor can move the fluid. capping it would just build up pressure till it blew the caps out.

i am not 100 percent sure on the looping either, just putting it out there

The looping would have the same effect. It would just build pressure until something gave. What you need to do is try to relieve the pressure that is causing the noise.. basically make a 'mini-muffler' of some sort. The high pitched squel is the result of high-pressure movement through a small opening.

how would i muffle the noise then? i can now picture the whole pressure and blowing up thing, so that won't be happening. If i wanted to, is it hard to replace the bearing inside the compressor? also i have no idea on how to remove the belt? due to the fact that there is no tensioner like your typical vehicle...

I was thinking.. some Jeeps came factory without A/C right? Then why not just get a belt for that XJ and just leave the compressor sitting? Then again, I dont know if non-AC XJ's have the same pulley setup. As for muffling, I dont know how to go about that. You just need something to disappate the noise

some jeep did come without a/c. 91'+ there is a bypass pulley available that i had bought at one point and i was going to machine it to properly fit, but the mounting locations are completely different. And i tried to buy a shorter belt and reroute the belt setup to just go past the a/c compressor but there is no way in the world to do so with having all the components spin all the proper directions while going around the a/c pulley.

I wonder if there is anyway you can just break the clutch and bearing so the pulley just free spins..

Looking at the belt diagram there is really no way to over ride it like in the new XJ's. So here is what I would do... this is just me and I am sure will sound insane... but again this is me talking. I would go to they JY and look for a broken compressor. Give em' a few bucks for it and then take it home and take it apart. My goal would be to see if there is any way to set the pully to move freely without acualy operating the compressor. I would not fool with looping it or anything else. Told you it would sound crazy but I seriously would do that.

Are you sure it isn't just the belt squealing? I had a 92 that was terrible for that. If I remember right the tensioner was down under the P/S on the left side of the engine. Kind of a pain in the butt to adjust.

If not the belt sounds like you might have a pulley bearing going bad. With everything disconnected the clutch shouldn't be engaged and turning the compressor. Is the plate (clutch) in front of the pulley turning with the pulley or stationary? If it's turning, it's hung up for some reason. You can just pull the clutch plate and there you have the idler pulley you need.

If the clutch isn't turning with the pulley you most likely have a bad pulley bearing which means you need to change that or go to the yard and grab another compressor.

To remove the clutch, take the nut off the shaft and try prying it off with a couple of large screwdrivers, or take it to a shop and have them use a puller on it.

Hope this helps,
Jim

I'd look around and see if you can find a diagram to convert your compressor into OBA... that way no worries about have to air up with a tank or finding a Gas station...

Thats what i am looking into for my XJ... the air doesnt blow cold and i have 4 windows that go down... haha

i am going to go to a junk yard and pull a different compressor and try that. If the noise does not stop then i will take one of the compressors apart and figure out what could be making the sound. and I also will be buying a new belt at the same time. thanks for all the replies.
