Default A/C how to

Hey guys don't really know how or where to look so here goes...

I've got a 98' ... I purchased in November previous owner said the A/C has never worked for them.. they lived up in higher elevation so they really had no use for it. However I do it's getting hot here and I want to see if I can get it working again. All the A/C stuff appears to be in tact, compressor lines ect.. When I turn the dial to A/C it still blows but the compressor doesn't kick on or anything... Do these systems have a low pressure switch that doesn't allow the compressor to kick on if the refrigerant is low? Where should I start here???

Thanks
Carlos

Try to bypass your low pressure switch with a paperclip and see if the compressor kicks on. It's the yellow and gray plug here. It's attached to the accumulator

If it does kick on once bypassed, then you are probably low on refrigerant, and either need it to be evacuated and refilled, or just recharged.

Ok so I bypassed the pressure switch and the compressor did not come on. The Auxilery fan was on though... Removed the by pass and plugged harness back in and the Aux fan wasn't running.. The engine is cold haven't run it at all today except to move it to the driveway... I pushed on the shrader (I'm assuming it's a fill valve next to the drum) and there is pressure in the lines..Check the big 20A fuse.. .fuse is good. So now what??? compressor?? Is there a home evacuation kit for the lines or do I need to take it to an auto shop??

Hmm. Well you may not have enough refrigerant, but there is still something else wrong if your compressor didn't kick on. At autozone here in Missouri, you can rent the vacuum pump and gauge set. Your compressor might be locked up, but I'm not positive so wait for someone else who is positive to help out.

Given the investment in tools, parts & knowledge, you would be farther ahead to take it in for repair. (especially in CA, they'll probably send you to jail if they knew you pressed that Schrader valve )

You rent the tools if your local auto parts store offers that. You get your money right back... As for the knowledge-recharging the a/c isn't very difficult, you just have to do it right. There are many videos and tutorials online.

Try disconnecting the connector that goes to your compressor clutch and jump it straight to the positive post of your battery. That will engage the clutch if it is good.
