I just finished a complete A/C overhaul on my 2001. The first compressor I used sounded super noisy after install (even though I followed break in and oil procedures). I returned it and replaced under warranty. This second one sounds better but is still noisy. I can hear the pulley in conjunction with the belt as I accelerate/decelerate. All parts are good to go I think (ie the belt and its tension) so it seems to me that the compressors are just cheaply made.

Post your experience with your compressors and which brands you would STAY AWAY from and which you have had success with.

ps. I went through rock auto and used the FOUR SEASONS 4010NK which I think is made by Sanden. Sd7h15 style. My previous model had no weird sounds - UAC CO4691C

 

In general you're better off with a brand-new compressor, the rebuilt ones have spotty quality and lifespans.

I've had a UAC compressor on my daily driver for about a dozen years now and it's been fine. I forget the model number but it's a knockoff of a Sanden compressor similar to the one used in the XJ. For that matter a Sanden replacement if available should be a good one, though probably high priced. (The original Sanden compressor in my '99 XJ still works great.)
