A/C compressor whining(bearings?)

Engine: 4.0 L
A/C compressor whining(bearings?)
Does anyone know if I can bypass the A/C compressor with the serp belt.I've got a really bad whining sound coming from it and I don't want to spend the money to replace the compressor.Any advice would be helpful.This is on my '87 Cherokee 4.0 I6
