I Have a 1988 cherokee limited. Last night the rear U-joint broke at about 40 mph. leaving the driveshaft spinning crazy and put a huge crack in my transfer case. is there any other jeep models that will fit into my jeep. looking for used transfer case.

 

what transfer case is in it? there's a silver and red round tag on the rear of the case that will tell you. Almost the same thing happened to my 88, but i was jumping a hill and the i landed the u-joint broke, dropped the shaft and cracked the tcase in several spots. I had a 242AMC in mine but switched to a 231j.

 

That SUX...Do you have a np242 or a np231? also it depends on if you have an auto or a manual. Usually you need to get one that matches your trans...Tj

 

Ok my transfer case is a np242 out of my 88 cherokee limited. I have a automatic transmission. my question is do i have to find that same one or will any other interchange. or does any other models have the same transfer case. The city where I live has a junk yard full of all those cash for clunckers cars that where traded in. and there must be at least 30 different cherokees there. but I could not find an 88 in the lot. Any input would be a great help.
