A compression test with a gauge on all cylinders wouldn't be a bad idea. Wet/dry best.
The spec. compression for the 4.0 is 120-150 psi, with no more than a 30 psi variation between cylinders.

A salvage yard or craigslist engine is always an economical plug and play route to go.....
A rebuild or purchasing a remanufactured engine (while nice) is kind of spendy.
