i have a 1993 xj inline 6 4.0 HO with 123,000 on it and i started buring oil . probly 2-4 quarts a month idk know rough guess but i can see and smell it. i think its to early to be rings but idk some one said valve guides. it always burns alot up in the woods i have blue smoke fillin the air sometimes maybe because the motor gets to hot idk. any info what i should do first?? thanks.

 

I think the first thing I would do is pull the valve cover and look at the valve oil guides. From there I would pull the spark plugs, and look at the cylinder walls with a bore scope for a bevel, or a lip at the top of the bore.

A wet and dry compression should be done first to determine if it's the rings or not. Good chance it isn't. Valve guide seals could be the only problem and they are easily replaced without removing the head.
