1990-1996 F150 4x4 shocks are good in the rear only for ~4" of lift but you need to swap lower bushings out. You need to visually check these before leaving the store as these trucks had 4 shocks and one pair is longer than the other... get the longer ones! (Monroe #59578)
however, they're valved for a big truck, and will be very stiff on an XJ. A better solution for up to 4" of lift are JK Rubicon shocks (the red ones) as they'll be softer and give a better ride.
There are no stock shocks that I know of that will work on an XJ for above 4" of lift

Is there a proven combination of leafs for different heights when building a bastard pack or is it trial and error? Do dakota and S-10 packs ride differently?

And yes dakota leafs and s10 leafs ride differently. S10 leafs have a higher spring rate, therefore are stiffer. Dakoka leafs are reputed for being nice and flexy due to their lower spring rate, but you get less lift out of them.

Dukie, when you did your power steering cooler how did you attach the cooler to the rig? it looks like you used the holes that had those plastic mounts ran through (sorry, having trouble trying to form my question....lol).

The cooler i picked up at the JY had metal straps attached to those plastic rivets. I put bolts through the straps into the header panel.
Here's a picture that didn't make it into the writeup but that shows what I'm talking about

I picked up a s10 leaf pack, cut the ends off and bolted the whole thing up under the main leaf. Got 3.5" of lift and it rides great.

Read this all through. So at the JY,
70's Bronco or F350 Front Springs
S10 Rear Leaf Pack
and am going to buy new shocks. Probably Rancho. for 3 inch lift.
Correct?
