Well for a few years now my buddy and I have been running these LSD style diffs we ripped out of volvo 240 and 740 turbos. They have a D30 housing rear end design. The nomenclature stamped is 1040 and 1041 on the housing somewhere. The only modification necessary to run it is 3/8" chopped off the driver side shaft. Everything else is just like you're gearing a regular differential with a regular D30 R&P.

Anyways its basically a G80. Many say they suck but we race on ours and know a few others that do as well. Have yet to break one. Its like that dirty secret everyone has heard about but never talks about.

So since no one really talked about this thing we did a few videos on it awhile back. We've learned much since.






I'm just saying...its a JY locker. I would totally opt for something new and more awesome but for the money its a no brainer. The fact it works is a huge plus.

 

I have an '89 Limited 4.0L I-6 and the alternator is starting to squeak quite a bit. Will a Grand Cherokee alternator work on it (I wouldn't mind a more powerful alternator than the one that's in it right now.) or can I fix the alternator like replace the bearings in it like I did with my A/C Compressor bracket?

 

So I am looking for some JK shocks to replace my trashed shocks. I found a deal of JK shocks with the coils. Could I use the coils? And is there a difference in ride quality with JK shocks and JKU shocks?

 

You can't use jk coils, jk coils don't fit the coil bucket and are different at the top than xj coils. Jk Rubicon shocks are the only that I know work for 2.5" to 3.5" of lift.

From experience, I don't recommend JK shocks over 2" of lift. I had to partially compress my 3" lift suspension in order to hook mine up.

 

Then what shocks should I use? And I'm only doing a 2.5".

 

The ones that are the right length. The only way to answer that question with a part number is if you install the lift and measure your suspension travel

Anyone ever try matching up the pinion yoke from a chrysler 27 spline 8.25 to the back of the transfer case? I actually have both around to try it, but the weather is nasty and ground too soft to dig out the axle at the moment.

Anyway, my thought is, from the pictures I can find, the splines look the same and they are both 27 splines each, but I dont know if they are the same diameter. Id imagine they are close as they have the same torque applied and same spline count.

The idea I had was to use the extra pinion yoke I have as a dirt cheap hack and tap sye: at that point my only cost would be the tap, a couple of grinder blades, and whatever funky seal would be needed to fit the base of the pinion yoke (and perhaps that seal holder for the next cheapest hack and tap using that slip yoke with strap fitting. Essentially Im try8jg to save the $65 over that variant).

The question is, are they really the same size?

 

No idea if they're the same size, but holding the yoke on would be quite the challenge. The end of the pinion shaft is threaded and accepts a large nut, the yoke bottoms out on the splines. You'd need to cut off some of the output shaft and then find an appropriate die to cut threads for that nut. (if it fit, if it bottomed out the splines at the appropriate place)

^ Or maybe weld a washer over hole of yoke, this is how the store bought hack-n-tap yoke is. In picture there is a washer for the bolt, behind it is the gold colored washer that is attached to yoke.

 

I have a 97 xj that needs a heater box. Will one out a 98 fit? Will one out of a wrangler fit ? (They look very similar)

 

if you're talking about a heater core. Buy a new one they're cheap, and it would suck if you got one that was just as bad as yours.
