Default Broken bolt rear upper shock mount.

2001 XJ Sport

Last week I noticed clunking noise from the rear like something was loose. Finally getting to check it today and the passenger rear shock mount lost a bolt and in taking the other bolt out to size up a new one it broke (funny how one is fine to shake loose and the other stuck enough to snap off). Anyway, nothing is holding it in now and I need to know the specs of the bolt and a way to remove the other without burning the whole thing to the ground.

Knock the nuts out with an air chisel, if you have air tools. Its far quicker than using a hammer and punch. Buy A flagnut kit (Rough Country 1082, for example). The nuts are welded to the bracket that slips in thru the top of the crossmember and serves as the anchor for the bolts. The kits come with new hardware. Thats the kit i used when i replaced both shocks, and it was well worth it.

The factory bolts like to twist off, so expect the others to do the same. IIRC, the bolts were 5/16-18. I think. Its been a while.

I used
these these
on my '98. Worked great. I did have to cut the drivers side one a bit to get it to slide in. Seemed a lot easier than fishing a bolt in there and was pretty quick.

You can reach the passenger side holes with your fingers and drop/hold the bolts in. For the driver's side I fashioned a bolt-holding tool with a ruler that was lying around:

Didn’t even need to fish them through but getting the wrench on was a little tedious.
