Default Brake pad install

So considerin my brakes squeek everytime i touch the pedal and the pads are gettin worn down, i think its just about time to replace em. Now, last summer i tried to do my dad's pads on his Grand Cherokee but i ended up just throwin wheels back on and takin it into the stealership kuz it proved to be a bit much for me. BUT.. i wanna try again with my XJ. anyone know of any write ups on how to do it or anything i should look out for?

Thanks in advance.

if you do a search im sure it will be there. but there isnt anything to it bud. just jack up your jeep and take off the front wheels. after you take the wheels off you will see the brake cailper. there will be two 14mm bolts holding the caliper on the jeep that are in plain sight. just one on each side behind the caliper. after bolts are taken out you shouldl be able to slid the caliper off and have acess to the pads. the outer pad slides out and before taking the other pad off attach a c-clamp and push the brake drum back in towards the caliper to make room for the new pads. but before you do that unscrew the cap for your brake fluid. the inner pad attached to the caliper drum will simply pop out by pulling. after that inspect the rotor for damage, if it looks wavy or not smooth to touch they need to be turn out my a auto shop or replaced. after that assemble the pads and caliper as you disassembled. easy as that bud

Now that's one of the best writeups I have sen on replacing the break pads. The hardest part for most people is putting the pads back in the caliper and so on.

I need to do my rear drum brakes but haven't touched drum brakes in years. So should prove to be fun.

that is a good write up, i just wouldnt use the new pad to press the piston back in because of possible damage

and make sure the notches go on the bottom, so when you reinstall the caliper, you fit the notches on the mount then push the top in tight.

pads go bad with pad left on them
you need to remove and inspect them for cracks
if they have cracks the pad is bad thats what is making it squeak
anytime you touch the pedal

a cracked pad can disintegrate at any time

I just did mine today with new rotors when i did my axle shafts, getting the rotors off if they are bad is a lot of fun took about 15mins on the pass side with a bfh to get it off. also helps to have a small file as I had some other rust issues that cleaned up with the file and made the new pads fit perfectly. on the XJ they are very simple no springs or clips just slide and go
