Agree with Bustedback.
These "miracles in a can" will always be available on the shelves of the parts stores. And they generally will not work. Some might buy you a little time if the problem is very minor. But I'm NOT a fan. They are at the very best a lame bandaid on a relatively serious problem that should be fixed correctly to prevent further engine damage.
Fix the problem correctly out of the gate.....

Only takes a few hours to change the head gasket.
The sealer stuff- sometimes it seals up minor leaks for a while. Problem is you never know when it will stop sealing the leak again. Probably when you are 150 miles from home with no tow truck money.

that stuff sometimes will work BUT if it DOES NOT it will kill your engine!!! Why? Because it contains silicates (water glass) which is an effective sealant but if it fails to seal it will get into your oil or combustion chamber and lock up your motor. This is the same stuff they used to destroy engines on "cash for clunkers"
A safer alternative is Bars stop leak pellets. I have had much success using Bars to seal leaky head gaskets over many years. Nothing will seal a blown head gasket but a minor head gasket leak can be sealed....been there done that many times.

2 cents.. I have heard of SOME 'miracle in a bottle head gasket sealers' causing issue due to clogging coolant passages and cool system components.

I have heard that the blue devil stuff and also the bars brand will definitely go farther than others to seal up a small leak or even prolong a possible blown head gasket; but when it's all said and done, if you know your head gasket is going bad, fix it. Better than spending hundreds after the old one blows on you
Let's just say that I spent 4 hours with engine brushes, scrapers, and solvent, cleaning someones attempt at using Bars Stop Leak on a car a few years back (when we were doing the head gasket). The owner first tried the Bars, and needless to say it made our (later) head gasket change a nightmare.

Sometimes a person does not have the time or money to replace the gasket so this can buy them some time until they do. It is better than letting antifreeze contaminate the oil and wiping out bearings.
Bars is ok but blue devil is a no-no.
The posts in this thread are actually dead wrong.
The stuff does actually works (on certain leaks, of course), but you need to decide for yourself and your circumstances.
I was once a huge skeptic about miracles in a can, until I personally knew two people who used "Bar's Leak" to solve their head gasket issues.
One of them still owns the car, over a year later. Runs great.
OP said he's buying time.
He might not have $1500-$2000 for a new head gasket repair.
(Even just a new exhaust manifold job is $1200 at the dealer)
Maybe he's planning on junking his XJ a year from now.
Good luck with your decision.
