Default blower motor going out?

ok it doesn't matter if I have the heat on or the A/C, they both only work when I have them set to high. Before last week all settings (hi, med, low) worked. Now only hi. When I bought my XJ when I turned the a/c or heat on the blower/fan sounded awful... my wife called it my heater monster... any ideas?

Blower motor is not the issue. What has gone out is the blower motor resistor board. It is located in the ductwork just under the glove compartment. Remove the black plastic panel under there and you'll see a plug going into a approximately 2" device screwed into the duct. Unplug the plug and remove the two hex head screws. The resistor board will come right out. Replacement is just the reverse. It'll likely appear quite rusted. The part is available at general auto part stores such as Auto Zone, etc. It should be around $30.

If the blower is noisy, either it is on borrowed time also or there is trash in there hitting the unit. It is removed from under the hood on the passenger side. The a/c accumulator is in the way and must be moved to the side or removed to service the blower.

nice thanks... I will take a look at the board tomorrow. It seemed to work in medium tonight but that's the first time in a bit.
