Default Blinking Check Engine Light/ Running weird

Hey guys, I have a 2000 xj sport. The check engine light came on yesterday and started blinking with a beep. It idles really low and runs rough. I looked in the manual and it said something about extreme catalytic converter issues. Soooo is that all it is? I need a new cat?

Happened to me to. Got a blinking light then the idle would jump up and down. It idled unusually low and the temp would go up.

It means something is causing the engine to run too rich and the catalytic converter will be damaged if you keep driving it like this. If you just throw a new catalytic converter on there without fixing the real problem you'll just burn up that cat too. Take it to a shop that can read the live data stream and determine what is really going on. Just because there is a code for a specific part does not always mean that part is the problem, you have to actually diagnose what is causing that code to set before you throw parts at it.

XX2 what Bustedback said.. Flashing CEL means park it asap. Check the codes.. I'd bet you'll see some misfire codes. Unburned fuel will take out your cat.. very bad.

Winner winner chicken dinner Glad you got it sorted out. Just curious, are you getting any CEL codes like O2 sensors? I had a bad coil in my 'not a jeep' and foolishly ignored it too long and it damaged the cat converter. As I understand it, the O2 sensor (after cat) throws a code even if the cat is just under 95% effective.

Well the codes were for the cat and O2 sensors, but thats just because of all the unburned fuel left by the faulty coils. The O2 sensors and cat were both good though after the coils were replaced
