Default Billowing Smoke while pulling the trailer

Gents,

I got about 50 miles from home pulling a 6x10 enclosed trailer with a 400lb motorcycle in it. Was on my way to a track day, something I've done a number of times. However, this time I started billowing white smoke. I pulled over and I had all kinds of fluid dripping, bunch on the exhaust and that's where the smoke came from. No noise from the tranny at all. I was able to move off to the side of the highway fine.

Flatbed took me 60miles back to my regular shop (f'n expensive tow). After things cooled down, no drips or leaks. They cleaned it off, drove it around, nothing. Fluid levels are fine. I've been driving it all week and no issues. This is really bizarre because I thought for sure the tranny or motor was toast. But its like nothing happened.

Any ideas?

White is likely coolant.

Your trans is over heating and losing fluid out of the top vent which then drips down on the exhaust. You need a large trans cooler. Common problem...

The first place I looked were the gages, temp and oil pressure was good.

That makes sense because when we got back, everything had cooled down and I've no problem since.

You couldn't tell from the leaking fluid what it was? If it was trans fluid is it possible it was over filled? A cooler is a GOOD idea.

I'm pretty sure it was not over filled. I think the overheating and venting is likely the problem. Ok, dumb question, where is the vent?

The vent should be just behind, or to the side of the valve cover, left or right side. Somewhere up high. The front axle vent and transfer case vent should be up there as well. They may be ziptied together, or left hanging. Find one and you should find the rest. Unless the PO messed with them or the hoses rotted off, which they sometimes do.

I'll look for those, thanks.

If the fluid in the transmission was heated, then it may need to be replaced.
