I have accquired 2 spare used AW4 for long term spares. Very cheap deal

What is the best way to store them ?

Firstly, should they be stood vertically on the bellhousing, to avoid straining the input shaft with the torque convertor weight ?

Or should the TC be removed, and stored separately

If stored vertically, I assume draining the trans well would be a good idea ?

To what extent should the Torque convertors be drained of fluid ?

I seem to recall seeing them stacked both vertically and horizontally at junkyards

All opinions welcome, I have other vehicle trans stored horizontally, with TC removed

 

I'd take the TC off, no question. I think fluid in it, assuming it's clean, is a good thing. I am currently storing one, and I have it well wrapped in plastic, as sealed as I can get it. But it's outdoors, so storage indoors might not need that.

 

On the floor.

 

My Grandpop used to say "Put it on the floor. It can't fall from there."

 

I would guess that the way a transmission is positioned installed in the vehicle would be the same for storage.

 

Make sure you put it in a vehicle every 2 to 3 months and run it for an hour and then pull it back out to sit again don't want the magical ju ju beans in it to leave to go look for the jeep they belong in again. My daddy always used to tell me no more than 2 months but I started waiting a little longer and I put a camera on the tranny and at 4 months the tranny exploded in the garage and all the beans attacked my feet when I opened the door. But at 3 months I will rarely have one ju ju bean come at my feet when I open the door. One time I had to go to jail for a weekend (long story) and the tranny sat for a month and a half, the second I got home I started installing it and the JU JU BEANS WERE COMING OUT WHILE I WAS PUTTING THE LAST BOLT IN.... I turned that puppy on so fast and they all came running back into the tranny.....


Long story short stay away from hair driers when you're in the shower.

I cant recall that being a consideration in what seems to be a fairly straight-forward & strictly automotive type question

Honestly transmission storage is the same as a heater core flush. Toss some pods in it and it should be good for 100k miles on the floor.

 

Always trust the tide pod. Just to make sure I don't look like a dick like cruiser though, I will give a real opinion...

Make sure if you don't seal it up with plastic wrap like one of the guys said that you don't forget to plug up the breather hole when you plug the other holes. I personally did nothing and am just going to change all my fluids again after my 500 mile oil change on my motor and I think I'll be good. I wouldn't leave the fluid in there if it's atf cause you'd think common sense says the cleaners in atf will break things down over time if it sits (no science in that statement though)
