Not that deep. I'm impressed but my wallet ran off.
Any other moderately priced recommendations?
Thanks!

*Clearwater Cylinder Head

*Alabama Cylinder Head

Both are very reputable and have helped hundreds of unlucky 0331 head owners. Their heads are redesigned and come with good warranties. Check out their websites, you may have to input "Chrysler" to find the 0331 on one of those two sites, can't recall which one.

03 and newer 0331 heads are not as prone to cracking as the 00-01 XJ versions.

You could also swap in a 0630 casting (used on 96-99). You'll need to fab up your own coil pack retainers if you go this route, but they're really simple.

Good options from FrankZ if you want to search for a used one.

Somewhere very late in 2002, Chrysler had this head redesigned and from that point forward, it was manufactured by the Brazilian foundry TUPY. So you would be safe with a used 0331 head from a Grand Cherokee or a Wrangler, but be sure it is 03 or newer or if you find an 02, be darn sure that it has the word TUPY stamped between cylinders 3-4, which is where the marking is located.

The 0630 is a very good cylinder head.

How do you know if you have this head, and what exactly is the problem, cracking/warping? I have a '99 Sport 4.0 and Ive heard conflicting reports on whether I have this head or not. How do I know for sure?

PS: Good luck on your swap!

On my '99, the head has a number cast into it right along the intake manifold on the driver's side around cylinder 3-4, I think. Fortunately for me, mine is 0630.

You are correct in where you will find the casting number. Almost always have to get a grease rag and maybe even a shot of degreaser to clean that area before you will be able to read it. It's hard to see.

Your 99, assuming it has a distributor, should be the 0630.

Yes. People in the forum frequently claim that '99s should be avoided because of this issue. It's possible there were some late '99 models that had the later head, but I've never seen one in person.

Short answer: if it has a distributor and not coil packs, it's a 0630 head.
