^i agree. i've been a mechanic for 9 yrs or so, and i work in a shop that carries valvolie products. i use valvoline max life oil, but i buy it at walmart cuz its cheaper for me than buying at my cost at the shop. kinda tough for a shop to make money though.
anyway, i buy mopar or wix filters elsewhere cuz i've taken off too many filters that actually had loose parts rattling around inside them. i spend the $6 on a mopar or wix filter.

What about oils? He also asked what type/brand of was best. What do you guys think? I've been using penzoil because when I got my jeep it had a bunch of oil buildup and the penzoil is supposed to be good at cleaning. But I'm thinking about changing things up soon.

I run Mobil One Filters and Mobil One Oil. I have always ran the oil in everything I own and I just started to use the filters and I like them alot. I used to use motorcraft filters for my fords but now they get mobil ones too.

i dislike penzoil. it is perafin based and likely to have sludge build up. i use valvoline max life. castrol is ok to. i don't really care for synthetic oil in good ole 4.0

I am currently using Castrol 10/30 dino along with a Fram. My 92 Cherokee Ltd has 239,000km (almost 150,000miles) on it. There are no leaks right now. I am thinking of switching to synthetic (Mobil 1 high mileage or Valvoline Synpower). But I have read that I should try a mix first. How do I go about doing that? Is there a brand that sells a mix? Also, on my next oil change, do I just drain the dino and add the synthetic oil?
Having read some posts here, I will definitely switch away from Fram. I am thinking of either Mobil or wix napa gold.
Here is another question, if I don't like the synthetic, am I able to switch back to dino on a future oil change?
Thanks.

Yes.. several brands offer a semi-synthetic oil.
If you want to switch back... drain the synthetic..put dino in. Couldnt be simpiler.
Now there are some points to consider when you are considering a switch.
First, if you have any little drips or seeping of oil, synthetics are going to leak. First synthetics are more cleansing than dinos and the chemical make up of the synthetic oil yields a smaller molecule than dinos.
Also when you are selecting oils, the US EPA has mandated a reduction of Phosphorous and Zinc in oil. So the American Petroleum Institute came out with the SM specification to meet that. Unfortunately, the new API-SM specification has reduced the Zinc and Phosphorous levels below what our 4.0l motors need. So make sure that you are using oils with the older API-SL specification. Mobile 1 Hi-Milage is one of the synthetics out there that still meet the SL requirement. You will see a series of specifications on the back of the bottle that will let you know what you need to know.

Mobil 1 oil is the best cheap synthetic you can buy and the filters are rated at the top. A few years ago STP filters were the exact same filter as the Mobil 1 filters.
I've run Frantz TP filters on most of my recent vehicles. It is probably the best affordable system you could get for oil filtration. Can't wait to get one for my new XJ. I ran them on many vehicles and have always loved them.

Castrol GTX high mileage and wix filter here but as for the Fram issue if you buy the tough Gaurd one i think it called its grey instead of orange they dont have the cardboard in them but they are the same price as wix and wix filters are some of the best out there IMHO

Switching is very easy... Drain the dino out..put the synthetic in.

I have a few questions for you. It looks like you are an Amsoil dealer or Rep.
Does Amsoil have their own testing facilities or do they use a third party?
Who formulates the Amsoil products?
Who are Amsoil products made by? Do they have their own refinery? If not who refines their oil products for them?
Oh, and what makes them better? Why are they worth more than other oils?
Thanks
Always wondered...
Mike
