Default Ball joint help

So I noticed some play in lower ball joint. 98 Cherokee D30. Looked like nut was too loose so I started to tighten it. Suddenly it started to pull the lower ball joint down out of the knuckle and more of the shaft was exposed on upper joint. Why would the lower joint start coming out and do you think the upper was pulling out of the socket. Is the knuckle trashed or just the ball joints. Wouldn't think the joint would be able to pull out of the bottom so easy. Any one had a problem where the lower joint would no longer stay pressed in righ enough?

Anyone ever use Napa ball joints? Either the Napa chassis parts or the cheaper ones. I think they are called pro former or something.

Napa chassis parts(the more expensive ones) are made by federal mogul, the same company that makes moog parts. I am an auto tech and a few times, i have actually gotten moog branded parts in a napa chassis parts box.

was the nut not secured with a cotter pin? how old are the ball joints? did you use a ball joint press to install or a hammer"?
