Default bad noise coming from oil pan

When i got my jeep it sounded like bearing noise and i was like i will get around to that. Now it sounds like the damn thing has blew up in the oil pan but the motor runs the same and oil pressure has always been good. 40 psi at idle and never low kinda good. How hard is it to replace the main and rod bearings in the truck? I have a 3" lift on it. Would it be ok if i found what it is like single rod bearing to replace that pair or do i have to replace them all. only reason i ask is money wise im ****ed. family is broke because my brother has some bad cancer and were all helping him out. thanks for your time.

All I hear is a frozen lifter. If you had a bad bearing, it wouldn't only happen for a couple of seconds.
Does it change with RPM or when the engine is warm or cold?
What are you running for oil weight and filter?

Something easy to check that just might save you some real grief. Automatic? Now and then the torque converter to torque plate bolts loosen. Pretty easy to pull the cover of the bottom/front of the bell housing and make sure they are tight. Guys have also posted with issues with the torque plate its self cracking, you might want to look.

Myself, If I went after the rod inserts, I'd do them all. (& most likely not touch the mains). The oil & gasket will cost more than a set of inserts..I think.

Not to disagree with Radi...the cam smacking a lifter can make a real racket.

Yes it dose change with rpm plus like i said there is a new noise that is hard to hear on the video but i will check the trans bolts because this new sound is nutz. That knocking sound never goes away. 10w30 is the oil i use.

So i have taken my oil pan off and looked in the lower motor. I didn't find a ton of metal or any bad bearing right away. so what did i find. I did see that the crankshaft is tight no play at all. rods have side to side play not sure about up and down if it dose not much. How do i find a frozen lifter and can i fix it with out taking the head off? Also i was wonder if any one had some easy tricks to get the upper rod caps off and install the new ones easy? thanks for the help again.

You can pull your lifters out just by taking off the valve cover, rockers, and push rods. I think there is a tool that will grab lifters out of their holes and make that job a little easier. As far as replacing the rod bearings are you planning on pulling the motor out?

I was responding to the quote attached to my post that said you can remove the lifters without removing the head. You can't do that on a 4.0.

I've been battling the same noise also but mine goes away and clears up after 1200rpms. Only makes noise at idle.

It's about removing the bottom, then rotating the crank to be able to reach/pop the upper insert out. Since there is that little key slot it will rotate/slide one way, and not so well the other. With a screwdriver accurately on the right spot on the edge of it you can give it a tap to spin it free. Then check the back of it and see what is stamped on there. (I've also used a wooden hammer handle to push pistons/rods up in the bore)

Don't mix up the caps! Mark them well if you need. Idk what marks they have, but, that's very important they go back the same way!

What year is your Jeep? It sounds exactly like my '97 4.0. If you fix it please post your solution. You should fill out your signature.
