Default Bad idle

I have an 87 Cherokee that while in park or neutral idles just fine with the right rpms and everthing but when you have it in reverse or drive it drops pretty low in rpm then it gets to low where it wants to stall. When I am going down the road at speeds it does fine. Oh and the trans has been looked through and my mechanic says it's clean and in good working order. Any takers on this? It would be a great help.

Go to www.cruiser54 and do Tips 1 through 5 first.

Are your intake manifold bolts loose?

How long since new wires, plugs, cap and rotor?

Ever cleaned the throttle body and IAC?

I'm not taking anything apart unless I'm repairing and for now I won't to keep from taking any bolts to the manifold out unless the gasket is gone bad.

Huh?

Just make sure they're not loose.

By putting a wrench or socket on them and turning them clockwise...............

Well if you don't take anything apart you probably won't find the problem, and thus we can't help.

Go hide in your closet and hope for the best, right?

Why bother coming on here hoping for help?

Well stated Slick.

I think I have this same issue. It's only when you first start the jeep correct? I realized that turning off the AC a bit before you turn it off helps a lot. At first I thought it had something to do with the fuel tank but no dice there.
