Default Bad distributor

Hello, I have a '96 Cherokee classic, 4.0 140,000 miles, brought into the ship yesterday for the belt and alternator, the guy tells me the distributor bearings are squeezing, he wanted 300 for the job, does that sound about right?

A rebuilt dizzy at the parts store is +/-$100 ( with old core) and takes 10-15 mins to remove the old/install the replacement. $300 for just the dizzy......Yikes!. $300 for belt, alt and dizzy sounds about right.

Yeah $300 for all of it is about right. For just the dizzy though, it's a matter of taking the wires off, unplugging the CPS and taking off the one retaining bolt. Throwing the new one in might take a bit to get it positioned right but all in all, maybe an hour or two job if you've never done one before. Not worth $300.

Thanks for all the replies, when I got home I ran it for a bit And don't hear anything squealing, I did before I had the alt and belt changed but not now, now idk if he was just trying to get more money out of or do I change it out to make sure it's done, if I decide to, would I have to time it at all or does the computer do it? also, is there an "O" ring to watch out for?

If you can't hear the squealing, don't worry about it. If it really was making a noise, you'd be able to hear it from inside the cab. They're really loud when they start to go out. So I'd say just don't worry about it for now. But keep an ear out for sure.

You do have to find Top Dead Center when doing the dizzy change. It's really not that hard to do. Do some searching around for a write up.

Our old dizzy squealed when cold at 1st start-up, then would not squeal after a few seconds of running. When we pulled the old dizzy, it was really tight.

I checked again today, don't hear anything, the only squeal that I had heard is gone obviously bc of the new belt, thanks to all for the help

The bearings went bad in my distributor causing it to wobble. It ate a rotor and left me stranded once, before I discovered it was the distributor shaft causing the problem and had to replace the assembly.

Mine just chirped like crazy. Tried replacing the cap and rotor and that didnt do anything. Only because there was a tad bit of play in the shaft.

You're fine though, I wouldnt worry about replacing the distributor. That mechanic was tryin to make some extra off you
