Default Back-Up Lights No Worky? Help

Noticed tonight that my backup lights arent working on my 1997 Cherokee Country 4x4, auto, 4.0l. Dont know how long they've been off. Checked all the fuses and they look good. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Well number one is you should check to make sure the bulbs aren't burnt out. If bulbs and fuses are all good, your neutral safety switch could be corroded, and should be cleaned.

Yup, agree with the others. Check bulbs and wiring first. If they're okay, it's going to be your neutral safety switch. Incredibly easy to remove and clean. Search for step by step instructions.

Where and how do you get to it. Is there a write up about it.

my step father was an electrician and part of the IBEW party for years. 7 out of 10 calls stating that the "switch was broken" ended up being a burned out bulb. that right ther made very very weary of asking for help unless i explored all options. nothing more humbling than to pay $75 hr for some one to change your light bulb.

I will definitely check the bulbs in the unlikely event both are burnt out at the same time.

If you google, you can find step-by-step directions on how to locate, remove, clean, & replace the NSS. I'm a visual guy, so the following online article got me started. I'm sure you can google the step directions and find one that makes the most sense to you.

Hmmm. Thanks for the replies. Looks like my NSS is the culprit.

Definitely your NSS. Best to clean it so you don't start developing other problems like non-starts. You'll be amazed how easy it is!

I'll have to look into that as I got the same thing happening to me last week. Back up lights stopped working for a day or so and than they were fine.
