Default back fire at 1/4 throttle

89 cherokee 4.0 auto..
Idles fine and drives fine but when I let off the gas and try and cruise at 1/4 throttle it backfires and sputters. Sounds cool when our ****ing around but eating up gas like crazy.. Not sure the problem. Changed the plugs so far

Is it backfiring through the intake or the exhaust?

Backfiring can be caused by a number of things, but one of them is fuel/air imbalance.

I'd start with some basic fuel pressure testing. For your 89, you should have 31 psi at idle. Now disconnect the vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator and the pressure should jump to approximately 39 psi. Be sure that the vacuum line is not wet with raw fuel, which can indicate a ruptured fuel pressure regulator.

If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge, they can often be rented inexpensively from parts stores; call around for availability.

Good luck and keep us updated.
