axle painting question and some other stuff
so im going to be repainting the axles on my 98 xj they are surface rusted mainly on the center and outwards. my question is this I have bought a 3m disk sander to make this job go faster, I have a can of rustoleum primer, should i use duplicolor engine enamel or some rustoelum paint? the enigne enamel does not need primer but I would like to use it on this application, can i use rusteoulem primer than duplicolor engine enamel?
I have set aside this weekend to complete the following:
1. replace tie rod ends to improve steering
2. sand and paint front and rear axles
3. remove wiring to 10 disk cd changer that p.o installed
4. install hella 500 driving lights
5. wash jeep
6. send front drivershaft out to be rebuilt
7. few other things
as you can see my weekend is going to be pretty busy!!
first thing im gonna do when im done with the jeep is take it four wheelin for the first time!!!!!

All depends on how rusted your axels are... What State has the Jeep lived in? Can you post a picture of the axel's?
Do you have a power washer? Hitting the axels with one of those before anything else really helps speed the process.
A high pressure carwash with degreaser is the next best thing. You'll be surprised how much these will take off. Do that then make the call on either sand blasting them, wire wheeling them or that 3M thing you were talking about.
If you have a decent sized compressor you could buy one of those pressurized sand blasters. I have one and it works great. They are not that much either. You will get a real nice job when you do that to prep it.
I primed mine and used farm implement undercarriage paint on mine. Cheap and holds up nice. Kind of a medium flat color.
You could POR 15 it. If you google to their website they have lots of info about doing this there.
OR
wait until you lift it and blast and paint them while you have them off.

the jeep lived in ohio for 3 years on and off, 6 monthes in ohio and the other 6 in n.c. the axles are not very bad its light surface rust on the rear the front has it the worst. i dont think im gonna be lifting this anytime soon probably for a few years. i have some rusteoluem high fill primer and two cans of semi-gloss black duplicolor engine enamel i think i'll lay downa a coat or two of primer and then two coats of engine enamel that should make it look good again, and keep them from, geting any worse.

Sounds like your budget may be tight. So, yea... what you are proposing will work fine. It's tough to get all nooks and crannies with the 3m wheel but it'll look nicer and protect it until you can lift it and do the 100% job.
And besides, think how much better you'll feel doing something nice for your Jeep!
