97+ was 29 Spline axles. 96 and prior were 27. And you have alot more gear options then just two, you have 3.07 (manual Transmission 4.0 jeeps only), 3.55 (Automatic 4.0 jeeps), 3.73 (upcountry pakage jeeps), 4.10 ( 2.5 Manual transmission jeeps) 4.56 (2.5 Automatic transmission/tow pakage jeeps). Im assuming you have the 4.0 with the AW4 so you have 3.55's unless you have the up country pakage.

more splines are stronger because it spreads the load over more area. basicly
