any rear axle will be pretty easy... just cutting and moving rear perches... maybe moving shock mounts... pretty sure any ford 9in is going to be way wide and you will have to cut it down unless you want wide... full axles... as for the front... your looking at alot of work and alot of money and alot of knowledge...

Default axle swap

I just swapped in a Chrysler 8.25" rearend into my 1996 XJ to replace the D35 that was in there.
If I understand correctly the 8.8 Ford out of an Explorer will also go in with a few mods.

Rear axle upgrades.

There is the dana 44 out of the old 87 or so xj's "rare find"

crystler 8.25 or something of that nature.

older dana 35's that dont use c-clips "I had good luck with these"

those should all pritty much bolt right up.

or the swap I put into my 1990 xj. a ford 8.8 out of the back or a ford explorer. have to do some metal fab with this one, but it looks and works nice when its done. comes in 4.10 gear ratio too! limited slip if you get lucky, and disk brakes.

If you find a Chrysler 8.25 from a cherokee it would be a direct swap, or a D44 from an old cherokee with the tow package.

The Ford 8.8 from an explorer is a great swap because you get disk brakes

If you do the swap with a ford 9in. then make sure that your driveshaft your using now will still be able to fit!!

very interesting, the chry. 8.25 i have been told isnt much better than the 35 just a lil stronger. For all that live around ft lewis wa where is a good place to find a used a ford 8.8? When i am checking those out at junk yards or whatever i happen to find one, what should i be looking for to ensure i am getting a semi good deal? Also what mods am i loooking at doing once i find a 8.8? Just perch adn shock mount re-locate?

there are mustang clubs all over the country check with your local club, i know here there is always one forsale. and as far as price i wouldn't pay more than $75 to 100 for one but prices differ in different areas. HTH

wrong... 8.25 axles are way better... some say the D44 isnt a whole lot stronger... im pretty sure the 8.25 is NOT a C-clip axle... which is what killed for the d35... i had a d35 non-c clip axle in my 89 but i found a D44 for $150 so i swapped it... now i gotta do gears to get my 4x4 back though... lol

The 8.25 is a C-clip axle. 27 spline versions (thu mid 96) can handle locked 33's. The 29 spline version (mid 96+) can handle 35's locked... Either is a huge upgrade over the weak D35. The D44 is not much of an upgrade over the D35 in my opinion. Yeah its stronger, but not by much. The stock D35 axle shaft strength is rated at 4,000 lbs/ft, while the D44 is only rated at 4600 lbs/ft (Results from a test performed by WARN). The ford 8.8 sounds like it would be a good swap for you. Its stock axle shafts are rated up to 6500 lbs/ft, and the axle is actually 1.5" shorter/narrower than the stock D35 (you can use wheel spacers to even it out with the front). To get an 8.8 with disks, you will want one out of a 95+ ford explorer. Be sure to weld the tubes to the housing, as they are notorious for spinning tubes.
