AX 15 Tranny Fluid
Okay well my tranny has a slow leak, so I am gunna be doing an fluid change here soon. A few questions. I have been reading up on here about what fluid to use. Here is what I have come to the conclusions of.
GL-3 is what is in there stock. But is really hard to find. Some people run 10w30 in there without problems, and some people run stuff like Redline and other synthetics.
I have a few questions. I want to run the good stuff in mine. I was thinking Redline MT-90. Alot of people have told me that MT-90 and MTL are btoh great products and make shifting better, but this fluid is GL-4...is that OK? My XJ has 226k on it. And I do not know the last time the PO changed the fluid. I am sure he did, seeing that he was a mechanic for dodge. I have heard myths of changing fluid at high miles causing catostrophic failure, but isnt that just if I flush it? I just plan to empty -> refill. Simple as that. I know I need fluid bad since this leak, and it is getting tougher to shift (cold weather isnt helping)
So to sum it all up, if I buy Redline MT-90, drain, fill it up (how many liters/quarts should I need), and drive, do you think I will have any problems?
Thanks for listening,
Ty

Since GL-3 is very hard to find... GL-4 is the correct replacement. GL-5 fluids are what you want to avoid in an AX-15. The sulfur in them will cause damage to your bronze tranny parts.
Redline fluids are very good products. They will not let you down.
The stories(not a myth,BTW) of trannies failing after fluid changes are the automatic transmissions not the manuals.
Capacity on an AX-15 is 6.8 pints..or just a little less than 3 1/2 quarts.
High end synthetics will also help with that stiff shifts in cold weather. But fix your leak first. No need to spend the money on the best fluid, if you are going to leak it back out.

This is correct, it's now what Mopar recommends for the AX15. See for yourself http://www.quadratec.com/products/52250_90.htm . Still not sure if I want to use it my trans. One member on here said they used 10W30 in their trail rig and it's been holding up fine, but mine is a Daily Driver, so I might just go Redline.

I'm more than a touch worried about that particular recommendation. We already know that Chrysler has completely blown recommendations for the AX-15 and AW-4 in the past. Last I knew, Chrysler no longer offered a GL-4 spec'ed fluid in their service line-up. This strikes me as another situation like the infamous AW-4 TSB's....recommend the correct fluid right up to the point you no longer have to honor warranties on them. Then recommend whatever happens to be financially the best for Chrysler.
