it depends on your hitch, class 1 hitch limits are 2,000lbs tongue weight 300lbs,class 3 is 5,000lbs tongue weight of 750lbs,owners manual did say autos only with class 3,but I would think an ax-15 could handle that.

I used to own a 92 4.0, ax-15 and installed my own class three hitch, no problems pulling whatever i wanted. a little lacking on power for the hills, otherwise just great!
Just pulled a f/s Z71 Chevy on a 32ft dual axle trailor threw the mountains of VA (coaltrucks wnt go the way I had to ***) Never had a bit of problems. Had to pop her down into 4HI to pullout on steep slopes but never got under 35mph

yep,
tranny is plenty strong, just be deliberate with the chutch and all will be fine with the weight you plan on lugging.
For what it's worth, I towed approx 6500lbs (used a Draw-tite class 4 hitch) from Maine to Arizona, 3500 miles, on the stock original clutch 10 years ago, and, that same clutch is still working fine in the rig today.

Yep 160K on the clock (1997 4Door 4.0/AX-15) and everything still original even the clutch & fluids in the tranny/diffs. Gonna change em here soon, already got enough royal purple to do em all with just been to lazy to climb under her.
Only thing I have done to my rig is A/C completely removed with bypass pulley and a gutted cat with O.E. Replacement muffler from my local exhaust shop, I dnt even have fan shrouds and even on a 110degree day she never creeps near 200. 90% of the time she runs around 175-180 even while pulling I've yet to see it rise above 180.

I tow my bass boat with mine...I guess it prob weighs well over 3500 pounds. Only problem is starting out on a bit of an incline, and coming out of the water I have to use 4 low.
