Default Aw4 Wont shift unless you let off the throttle

So i recently picked up a 99 Cheromee sport with a small lift and 31s. No mechanical problems, warning lights or anything else at thw time of purchase.. or so i though. Today driving to work i noticed it will not shift unless i let off the throttle. It will go into every gear its just i need to lightly let up the accelerator. It shifts smooth and theres no warning lights on. Tps sensor going?

Could be the 'kickdown cable'. It's connected to the throttle body and helps controls shift points in relation to throttle position. Simple adjustment.

Cables stretch. First make sure the fluid is not low and looks red.
Use only Dexron/Mercon III.

According to the reciepts, it had a transmission flush with a new filter 5k miles ago, it was full and still a redish color also had the diffs serviced and t case serviced at the same time.

Uh oh. Some say this knocks loose any crud and then circulates in the transmission. It's most likely not an issue however.
The kickdown cable is directly related to what you are describing.

Hmmmm, I will keep that in mind, not sure what is causing that.

That cable is not really a "kickdown cable" like we had on older cars. It's a TV cable. Throttle Valve.
As the throttle is opened, it moves a valve in the trans to increase the line pressure for firm shifting under load.

I would adjust it for sure.

Really sounds like a TPS may be going bad. I sure hope they didn't flush your trans and put ATF+4 fluid in it.

Here's how to adjust the cable:

If adjusting the TPS and changing the fluid doesn't help..... Then I'm sorry to say you have likely burned up the clutch pack. you description matches, mine exactly.

Why do you think the clutch pack burned up? From a flush or wrong fluid?

Trans is not slipping at all. It pulls in all gears and will chirp 2nd if it does shift on its own.

Good. The comment about feeling like it's in 4 low for a second when leaving a stop concerned me.

Thats why i think its a tps sensor. Its holding it back. Both oxygen sensors are brand new mopars so. Also the jeep only has 130k and seems to be very well maintained and never offroaded

Because the OP symptoms match, what my trans was doing, 100%... He just isn't slipping YET. Mine didn't start slipping till I fought the shifting issue for about 4 months. Mine would have the, funky having to let off the gas to get a shift thing, in 1 and some time 2nd. Bit once it went throuigh all the gears 1 or 2 times it would be good and strong and shift normal for the rest of the day. Mine did have an additional symptom of a slight whine.

Before we go crazy with replacing transmissions and TPS, how about the simple things first?

  1. Adjust cable. It's free, it's easy, it might be all you need. Just do it!
  2. Find out more about that transmission "flush". What fluid did they use?
Both of those things are zero cost. #1 might be the whole story. # 2 might tell a little more in case # 1 is not the whole story.

Then go from there.
