Hey I've got a 96 XJ Sport. A few weeks ago I had a really bad leak in my tranny cooler hose line and I filled it back up. It was running fine for a while but now the tranny jerks and feels like it doesn't fully shift into first and second, it doesn't always shift smoothly. I've checked the tranny dipstick while the car is idling in neutral and its full and it also doesn't smell like it's burnt.

You may have done damage to the trans when it leaked all the fluid out.

 

What sort of damage do you think it done?

 

Good chance it's ruined.

 

What kind of fluid did you fill it with? I don't like ATF+4 in AW4's with significant miles on them. Sometimes it's just fine, other times it slips and jerks.
If that's what you used....replace it with Dex III and see what happens. You may (hopefully) luck out.
