AW4 with no TCU
I am curious whether or not a AW4 would operate without any wiring or TCU. I have read that it would, but you would have to shift it manually, which is no big deal
I am thinking about building a small buggy with the junk that is laying around the house for playing in the creek.

False, 2nd gear is electronically controlled.
Without a TCU, you must shift manually and when you go from the 1-2 pos. to 3 it will skip 2.
You can pick up one of the radesigns setups, or make your own. Basically it controls the solenoids.

I think you're right. It's been a long time since I drove without a tCU. There's a big jump and a missing gear. Maybe it was going from 1 to 3 that I experienced. Certainly not something I would want to live with for any period of time.

ok so from what I can gather from doing research, powering the Purple/white stripe wire will give me 1/2 control and powering the White/black stripe wire will lock the converter. Am I correct?

so shiftng would be:
pull shifter to first- 1st gear
flip switch- 2nd gear
Move shifter to third- 3rd gear
Move shifter to OD- 4th gear
Downshifting would be exact opposite, correct?
this would be trailer everywhere it went, no road driving, so I highly doubt i would ever even put it in 3rd or OD except passing it to get to 2/1
